Why Ontario, and only Ontario, today

This directory covers Ontario only, today. Ontario is the province that publishes a complete register of its private schools under an open licence, with a name, address and credit-granting status for every one of them, and that completeness is what makes a directory like this possible to build honestly and keep current. If another province publishes an equivalent open register, this directory can extend there; until then, it does not guess at what it cannot verify.

Why credit authority is the fact worth checking

A private secondary school in Ontario can only issue credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma once the ministry has inspected it and granted that authority; a school that has not been inspected, or has applied but not yet been approved, cannot. That inspection record is public, and this directory reports it plainly for every secondary school rather than folding it into a rating or leaving it out. It does not apply to elementary schools at all: Ontario does not inspect private elementary schools for credit authority, because elementary schools do not grant secondary school credits, so the question this fact answers simply does not arise for them.
