Licensed centres
Whitecourt's registry entries are unusually complete on age licensing. Three of the seven licensed centres are approved for infants, three for toddlers, and all seven for preschoolers, which is rarer in Canadian registry data than it ought to be. Not one of the seven has a public review. Between them they hold 343 licensed spaces, there are no day homes on the list, and that is the whole of the licensed supply inside the town limits.
Three of the seven are junior kindergarten programmes attached to schools, at École St. Anne, Whitecourt Central and Pat Hardy. Those run on a school calendar. A parent working full time year-round will find the practical list is closer to four: Whitecourt Early Learning and Child Care at 105 spaces, Precious Sprouts at 82, For Families Daycare at 52, and Whitecourt District Preschool at 24, though that last one is a preschool by name as well as by licence and is worth confirming before you count it as full-day care.
Whitecourt is a resource town roughly 180 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. Shift work in forestry and in oil and gas puts real pressure on a nine-to-five child care day that was never designed for it. Ask about early openings and late pickups directly. Very few licensed programmes anywhere in Alberta publish their extended hours, so calling is the only way to find out, and a centre that opens at six for one family will often do it for another if the question is asked plainly.
Alberta's affordability grant reduces posted fees at participating licensed programmes, and a separate income-tested subsidy applies for families who qualify. Both are administered provincially. Neither is automatic. A centre has to be enrolled before the grant does anything at all to the fee you are quoted, and the number a receptionist gives you over the phone may or may not already have that reduction built into it.

Verify Licensing
Confirm the centre holds a current provincial licence. A licence means the province checked baseline health, safety and staffing standards — it is a floor, not a ranking.
Read Parent Reviews
Reviews cover what an inspection report never will: what drop-off feels like, whether messages get answered, how long staff stay.
Ask About Curriculum
Ask what a Tuesday actually looks like. "Montessori" and "play-based" mean different things at different centres, so the daily schedule tells you more than the label does.
Consider Schedule Fit
Check the posted open and close times against your commute, not just your workday. Then ask what happens when you're late.

We email the centre and ask whether they have room for your child's age group. If they answer, we send you what they said. We don't hold live vacancy data, and centres aren't obliged to reply.
