Licensed centres
Antigonish has five licensed child care centres, and the age data on them is unusually complete for our Nova Scotia coverage. All five take toddlers and preschoolers. Just one is licensed for infants under twelve months, the YMCA STFX Early Years Centre on Camden Loop. That single infant option shapes most searches in this town. If you're back at work before your child turns one, you are choosing between one centre, unlicensed care, or a commute of roughly sixty kilometres west to New Glasgow, and none of those three is a comfortable answer for a parent counting down a parental leave. Plan for it early.
The town is built around St. Francis Xavier University and the YMCA centre sits on campus land. Campus centres often give priority to student and staff families. Whether STFX does, and what its list looks like for a family with no university connection, is the question worth asking first.
Children's Place runs two of the five listings, one at 81 Church Street and a Learning Centre at 89 Highland Drive, which means the town's five sites are actually operated by four organisations, with Ponderosa Play and Learn on Ponderosa Drive and The Red Apple on Carter Crescent making up the rest. Four operators. Five sites. Three of those sites are also licensed for school age, which matters if you have two children and want them under one roof.
Not one of the five carries enough Google reviews for an average. In a community of about four thousand that isn't surprising and it isn't a warning sign. Ask for a tour instead. Watch a single transition between activities, ask how long the educators in that room have been there, and you will learn more in twenty minutes about whether the place suits your child than any star count could tell you.
Nova Scotia licenses these centres through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the provincial fee reduction has cut regulated rates substantially since 2022. Rates still differ by age group and by centre. Confirm the daily figure with the centre.
Verify Licensing
Confirm the centre holds a current provincial licence. A licence means the province checked baseline health, safety and staffing standards — it is a floor, not a ranking.
Read Parent Reviews
Reviews cover what an inspection report never will: what drop-off feels like, whether messages get answered, how long staff stay.
Ask About Curriculum
Ask what a Tuesday actually looks like. "Montessori" and "play-based" mean different things at different centres, so the daily schedule tells you more than the label does.
Consider Schedule Fit
Check the posted open and close times against your commute, not just your workday. Then ask what happens when you're late.

Ask about spots near you
We email the centre and ask whether they have room for your child's age group. If they answer, we send you what they said. We don't hold live vacancy data, and centres aren't obliged to reply.
