The community boundary isn't where your search should stop. Three of Mill Bay's seven listings carry Cobble Hill Road addresses, because families here treat Mill Bay, Cobble Hill and Shawnigan Lake as one market and the licensed programmes have arranged themselves accordingly. Six operators cover the seven listings. One of them is home-based, and Duncan is fifteen minutes north whenever the local lists close.

What to know about childcare in Mill Bay
Birdsong Nature School is registered twice, on Dickson Road and on Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road, George Bonner Elementary Out of School Care and Cobble Hill Montessori Group Care share the 3060 Cobble Hill Road address, and Q'shintul Mill Bay Nature Out of School Care is at 3175. Starchild Centre is on Nightingale Road. Children's Choice Early Learning Childcare on Briarwood Crescent is the only home-based listing.
Read the names carefully before you call. At least three of the seven are out-of-school care, which means school-age only, and that makes the practical under-five list materially shorter than a count of seven implies.
None of the seven carries age band data. None has enough Google reviews for a rating either. Two have websites and all seven have a phone number, so this is a phone-first market. Duncan is fifteen minutes north and holds most of the Cowichan Valley's licensed capacity.

Tips for choosing childcare in Mill Bay
Verify Licensing
Confirm the centre holds a current provincial licence. A licence means the province checked baseline health, safety and staffing standards. It is a floor, not a ranking.
Read Parent Reviews
Reviews cover what an inspection report never will: what drop-off feels like, whether messages get answered, how long staff stay.
Ask About Curriculum
Ask what a Tuesday actually looks like. "Montessori" and "play-based" mean different things at different centres, so the daily schedule tells you more than the label does.
Consider Schedule Fit
Check the posted open and close times against your commute, not just your workday. Then ask what happens when you're late.
